The Artist

Lawrence Roycroft is purist at heart and has been photographing since 1994 after completing his BA (photo) at Curtin University. These Infrared photographs were taken from Perth to Tasmania, using single exposures and minimal post-processing.

Infrared transforms the familiar Australian landscape into something timeless. The harsh Australian sunlight, rather than a hindrence, now becomes a source of intense drama and ethereal beauty — deep luminous skies intersected by white clouds with trees and plants alive with a glowing vibrancy. Long exposures create transient moments, the permances of mountains contrasting beautifully with the gentle swaying of branches or the rippling of moving waters.

At a time when images are increasingly laboring to a 'postcard' perfection, these landscapes offer something different — they are slow, personal, present and weighty, cause for reflection and pause.

Transience is his first exhibition. He hopes simply that you enjoy the work — and that in looking carefully, you find something worth pausing for.
