Lawrence Roycroft has been photographing with infrared since 1995 — drawn to what it reveals that the eye alone cannot see. These Australian landscapes — Tasmania, Perth and beyond — were made with single exposures and available light, minimally processed. Straight photography, in the tradition of those who believed the camera itself, used honestly, is enough.

Infrared transforms the familiar Australian landscape into something timeless. The harsh midday light that defeats conventional photography becomes, through infrared, a source of intense drama and ethereal beauty — deep luminous skies intersected by white clouds, trees and grasses that glow as if lit from within, long exposures that hold movement in suspension. The permanent and impermanent held together in a single frame.

At a time when images are increasingly perfected toward a kind of enchanting unreality, these landscapes offer something different — imperfect, present, and quietly alive.

Transience is his first exhibition. He hopes simply that you enjoy the work — and that in looking carefully, you find something worth pausing for.
